Overview
This large site is located between the town’s core to the north and residential area to the south.
The Co-op building is located on the north-west corner of the site and the remaining area is used as surface car parking for the Co-op store.
The site can be accessed by vehicle or on foot from either the High Street or Crossley Street.
This site also includes the disabled car park located off Crossley Street
and is surrounded by a mix of retail, commercial, residential uses.

The primary aim is to:
| • |
re-order this southern gateway/townapproach to promote a positive sense of arrival |
| • |
strengthen connections with Oxford Street |
| • |
introduce a new civic space with additional retail opportunities as a foil to the Market Place |

These aspirations can be achieved by:
| • |
re-providing the co-op foodstore to southern boundary configured to
contribute positively to the space with which it relates |
| • |
establishing a major new public space as a counterpoint to Market Place introducing a consistency of floorscape treatment which establishes a relationship with Market Place |
| • |
promoting animated edges to the space which collectively create a
positive sense of enclosure |
| • |
ensuring a range of additional retail units appropriate to contemporary
retail requirements are made available to bolster the town’s offer |
| • |
creating opportunities for south facing café/restaurant to spill-out/enliven the new square |
| • |
configuring waymaking, landscape treatment to strengthen pedestrian
link and visual connection between the newly configured store, the square and Oxford Street |
